What is the CLD program?
The Certified Lighting Designer (CLD) certification program is the world's first evidence-based certification in lighting design. The program assesses whether an individual can operate as a lead architectural lighting designer professionally and proficiently.
Am I eligible for this certification?
You must have operated as a lead architectural lighting designer for at least three (3) years to be eligible. Your portfolio will also need to contain at least two (2) projects completed within the last seven (7) years.
How do I apply, and what do I need to prepare?
You need to demonstrate your proficiency by completing an application online. You can work on your application in multiple sessions before submitting it for review. The application requires the submission of (1) written responses, (2) a portfolio of supporting exhibits, and (3) completed attestation letters.
What is required for the project portfolio?
Applications are submitted with an up-to-date and comprehensive portfolio that includes two to four (2 - 4) projects demonstrating competence in the recognized Domains of Practice. Your chosen projects must have completion dates within the last seven (7) years.
What are the image requirements for exhibited projects in the portfolio?
All images must be high resolution and arranged to fit on A4-formatted pages. No more than four (4) images should be on one document. You must remove all watermarks or overlays that could identify you or your firm.
How much does the certification application cost?
The application fee is $110 (USD). Professional members of approved lighting design associations receive a discounted price of $90 (USD). Payments must be made in full via credit card before reviewers receive applications.
Can submissions be written in a language other than English?
The program currently only accepts applications in English. The Commission intends to accept applications in multiple languages as the certification program evolves.
How is my application reviewed?
Multiple highly experienced and respected reviewers from the architectural lighting design profession will receive your application. These reviewers have undergone intensive training on the assessment of CLD applications.
What happens if additional information is needed to demonstrate competency in all domains fully?
If reviewers request additional portfolio information for no more than two (2) domains, you can address the identified omissions by providing information on the projects you have submitted. You may also choose to submit new projects.
What happens when I achieve Certified Lighting Designer status?
You can use the designation "CLD" after your name to demonstrate your proficiency. In addition, you will receive a congratulatory letter, a digital certificate, a press release, and formal announcements that will be useable to promote your accomplishment to clients and the public. Your name will appear in the CLD website directory. The Commission will send a formal notification to your employer.
What if I do not achieve the certification?
You are encouraged to reapply and submit a new application. Doing so does require new application fees.
How often must CLD certifications be renewed, and what is required?
Annual recertification is required to maintain CLD status. You can read more details on recertification requirements on this site.
Is there a summary of CLD application requirements and processes?
You can download the CLD Handbook as a PDF on this site, which provides the information needed to apply to the Certified Lighting Designer program. See the Resources section for additional information and forms.
